The Tech Bubble #6: stay small

When building an indie business, staying small is better than trying to grow fast at all costs.

The Tech Bubble #6: stay small

As you already probably saw, last week unfortunately I skipped an edition. I apologize for it! I will keep the weekly format going forward, no matter what.

🧠 Startup Wisdom

When building a business, the “traditional wisdom” says that you need to grow fast, get employees, expand, get more and more market share and ultimately build an empire.

But the more I think about it, the less attractive that approach seems. With size, the amount of work that needs to be done increases. That leads to employees, to management, to responsibilities and financial pressure to always have enough cashflow to sustain your employees (because if you are in EU at least, if you have some bad months, you can’t adjust fast enough to save your company. If you are put in a position to do layoffs, you are in a very bad position because here, layoffs cost… a lot, and that cost will put additional strain on your company’s finances).

In the indie hacking world, the opposite is more attractive: grow at a lower pace, and once you get to enough profit to sustain your lifestyle, deliberately stop growing, or at least grow at a slower pace so that the added work doesn’t require expanding operations.

🏆 Indie Highlights

  • BrightInvestor: a real estate database of deals for people looking to get into the real estate game as an investor. This indie hacker brings in ~10k USD per month with this tool. You can read more here.
  • ProperQR: They bring in ~7000 USD per month by printing the QR code for a quick Google Maps review, putting it in a plastic stand and delivering it to small businesses with a physical location. Simple, yet high margin and with a good enough demand.

)✈️ My Journey

  • Quest of the Hero: I am getting this week the first batch of new graphics, and I will start integrating them. I will soon be able to post before/after screenshots, and in the following weeks I am aiming to come out live with a Demo and a Steam page. Keep tuned!
  • Vuuh: “integrations” is the name of the game! More and more clients explore automation, and call us to help them either deliver data automatically from the already established ERP systems they use, or import data automatically, as they receive the merchandise.
  • New indie startup: I am exploring starting a new indie startup, which involves adding AI to an already established market. I am exploring the costs (because there are some costs involved in the initial release other than the development and the domain name). I will disclose more details as I delve deeper into the validation process, and making progress towards an MVP.
